We want to give you a little better understanding on what kratom is. To start please read our kratom info page here. There you should get a quick guide to the most basic informtion about kratom. In this article we will dive a little deeper, in order to understand how this magical supplement called kratom works when used properly and responsibly. Just like with anything, (alcohol, caffeine, etc) when used to excess, it can be habit forming.
Without boring you with a bunch of scientific jargon that nobody understands or honestly cares to understand, we will talk briefly on what makes kratom work. There are dozens of alkaloids in the kratom plant that when consumed and processed by the body create different effects. The two main alkaloids talked about are Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. Mitragynine should look familiar if you have seen the scientific name for kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa). Mitragynine is abundant in the kratom leaf and works with the opioid receptors in the brain creating relaxation in some and stimulation to others. This is why we always say "everyone is different" when describing what the effects are like. But, overall you should experience improved mood and analgesia (pain relief). While Mitragynine is abundant in the kratom leaf, the alkaloid 7-hydroxymitragynine is much less prevalent but is many times more potent, up to a dozen times more potent than morphine as a matter of fact but much less addicting. Why does this matter? Kratom strains have different levels of all of the alkaloids which give each strain different effects. For example the higher concentration of both Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine in red vein kratom gives it more sedating properties while the green and white vein are more energizing because of the lower concentration of these two alkaloids. We will try to talk more about the different alkaloids in another blog article.
We briefly mentioned 3 strains of kartom - Green, White, and Red. While these all work similarly they do offer you the opportunity to choose what you want out of kratom. Here is a quick list of what you can generally expect out of each. Remember everybody is different and these strains can be slightly different depending on what region they come from.
Red - With high 7-hydroxymitragynine concentrations, this strain typically offers the best pain relieving effects. It can be sedating too so when taken later at night it can help you sleep.
White - Known as a nootropic substance it can help with focus and depression. Some have replaced their morning cup of coffee with white vein kratom because of those qualities.
Green - A good choice for daily use. While it isn't a strong pain reliever or a high energy strain it does offer a little of both. So if you can't decide which way you want to go, this would be the one for you.
As we mentioned before where the kratom comes from can also make a difference on what effects it offers. Thailand, Indonesia, Malysia, Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Borneo all offer slightly different effects. This will be covered in a later article. For now, the most important thing to know is how much to take. While "everybody is different" and each strain has varying strengths here is a chart for dosages based on experience and reports. These are not absolutes and should be taken as a guide to start. Using less when using a new strain is recommended until you know how each strain affects you.
Very Mild 1 gram
Mild 2-3 grams
Moderate 3-6 grams
Strong 6-10 grams
Most common dose is around 2-3 grams but as the chart shows you can tailor it to your needs. Keep in mind that low doses (1-3 grams) tend to give you a stimulating effect while larger doses (3+ grams) tend to give you a more sedative effect. Measuring by weight is always preferred but if you don't have a scale handy you can use a teaspoon or tablespoon. Just remember, the weight of the kratom powder will vary depending on how finely ground the kratom is which is why measuring by weight instead of volume is best. If you need to use a spoon, a level teaspoon is about 1-1.5 grams. Since there are 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon a level tablespoon will be around 5 grams and the most common dose. Of course, not to make this more confusing, if you only weigh 100 pounds you should reduce your dose a little just like with any supplement or medication.
With this brief introduction you should have the basic knowledge to confidently consume kratom. We will cover more in later articles and as always we are here for any questions you might have. Below is a list of common uses/benefits....- Pain relief
